Helios 44-2 58mm f2 SERVICED

The Helios 44-2 is one of the most famous Soviet lenses. For many, this lens marks the beginning of their acquaintance with Soviet optics. Based on the Biotar 58mm f2 design, it has its own character and recognizable style.

Production

It was manufactured by the Valdai factory from the late 1970s. Its black body and simple, reliable design made it convenient and durable.

Optical Character

The Helios 44-2 produces a soft, plastic image with a pronounced character.

• Sharpness in the center: even at open aperture, it remains confident, but without the “sterility” of modern optics.

• Edges of the shot: a smooth drop in sharpness creates depth and a natural 3D effect.

• Color: with a slight shift towards warm tones. Shades look natural and saturated, without excessive brightness.

• Bokeh: can be soft and creamy or swirly, depending on the shooting conditions.

Backlighting and sunlight handling:

The Helios 44-2 has a simple single-layer coating. Therefore, when shooting against the light or in the sun, the following appear:

  • Soft halos around glare
  • Light haze
  • Reduced contrast

Shots take on a characteristic cinematic look.

Application

The lens is often used in:

  • portrait photography
  • fashion lookbooks and films
  • music videos and art films
  • documentary projects where authenticity is important.
